i like elliot sadler. he was in cup full time for 12 years. he is in his eighth year in the xfinity series. he has been there, done that, understandswhat it's like to be in big races. i like that experience. >> i like the youth. i like the excitement of the youth. erik jones, three wins this season. the truck series champion, truck series rookieof the year.

this is going to be his only shot at the xfinitychampionship. going full time sprint cup next year. he is my favorite in the chase. >> one vary yabl that has to be added intothe quakes, kyle busch, the winningest kpflt series driver in the field today. who and beat kyle busch. >> erik jones, also daniel suarez. those two guys are fast drivers, and theyhave the same cars as kyle busch. you have to think they are going to be contenders.

on yesterday. now he knows the task at hand, have a goodclean race, stay out of trouble. he has a good starting spot. he will roll off 13th. >> jeremy clements knows he needs help tomake it in the xfinity chase in 2016. he told he moments ago he wishes it was 2015because he came into this race last year 11th in the championship standing that obviouslywould have been good enough to put them in the chase. he told me no matter what, i'm proud of whatour race team has accomplished this year.

we have five full time employees and herewe are still with a chance to make the race. jeremy holding out hope to be in the chase. >> marty has four full time employees in hissmall team in atlanta. a 29-year-old going for his first xfinityseries championship if he can hold it together here this afternoon. he is the last man in with a 20-pun cushionn. his favor, he loves the 1 1/2 mile tracksand his team has performed well on them here this weekend. they are the little team that could all yearlong.

you have got locked into the chase. what's your strategy going into this race? >> as far as the chase goes, the pressureis off for us today but we definitely want to win this race. get good momentum going into it. i think you will see everybody sidesing eachup other, getting set for the chase that's going to go down going into homestead. it is a good we can to get momentum rollingand put ourselves into position. >> in the chase there are a lot of races thatare this size.

does that make this race more important. >> it does. you have to run up front, get the points youneed to and win these races to get yourself to the next round. >> we know you will be mashing the gas hard. we'll be watching. have a good day. >> leading the field is the 2016 toyota camryand the official pace car for today's race. we're going ride along with a few differentdrivers, including the 48 of drenan poole.

number 1. look at the race analysis for today's racefrom chicagoland. the race length, 200 lapse. 300 miles on this mile and a half track. it's 45 miles per hour on pit road. that is going to be bringing the speeds waydown, when they will be going over 180 or 190 miles an hour on the racetrack. fuel window is 55 to 60 laps. >> fuel use may come into play today.

the good year tires seem to be lasting wellso the fuel will be stretched we will have a competition caution on lap 25 due to theweather that came through last night. >> i have set up the undog story of ryan seeing. his small team. when you come down to the overthe wall crewyou will see a variety of uniforms and crew members. the pit box is from bk racing. but this group is from four different teamsthat will service his car. the good news is that's the i with a it'sbeen all year and this group has worked together

to give ryan the best chance pop. >> this is a hometown race for justin allgaier. he is from nearby riverton illinois and boywould he like to get a winly. he has come so close so many times this season,he finished runner up three times. he admitted it has him frustrated not to havesecure a win but hungry for more. >> i want to listen in to the 11 car radioof blake cooke, currently 11th in the point standings. 23 points above the cutoff line. here was the pep talk.

>> you have done a phenomenal job all year. okay? like i told you before. i would not rather have anybody else in thatrace car. so just finish this deal out and then we gorun for a championship. you have fun. that's the main thing. you have fun out there, we'll take all thesweat and tears out here. >> chris is a high energy guy.

he believes in high energy. he believes in motivation. he worked very, very hard, starting with nothingto build this team this year. they have done a nice job getting him in position,solid will he in 11th. have work to do today, but if they do theirjob they are fine and in good shape. >> work to do today. as does kyle busch, who is out in front andleading this field through turns 3 and 4. again, kyle busch has chosen the inside linefor the start of this race. on his outside, teammate daniel suarez makingup row number 1.

allgaier and sadler back in row 2. they are getting to the restart zone. the green flag is in the air. underway at chicagoland. early on the 22 of joey logano ducked to theinside trying to advantage of a little bit slower restart. >> this racetrack, that wide front straightawaygives drivers a chance to use the apron trying to make a move getting into 1. they are side by side into 3.

>> great run by daniel suarez of the 19 earlyas he tries to get by kyle busch for the first lap. who will lead the first lap at chicagoland? >> joey logano is down on the apron again. three wide back there in row approximate. >> it was kyle busch who was just in frontof that 19 when they went across the start/finish line. but now daniel suarez takes advantage of themomentum on the high line and gets by kyle busch.

>> aggressive move. we talked about him at the beginning of theshow. we know he is fast, young, he is not afraidto take kyle busch on. did it early in the race. >> he knows he is in the chase. he has already won, going to advance. he can be more aggressive if he wants to be. >> that's a great sound. when you are driving and your spotters says"new leader "you love to hear it.

you talked about momentum, we use that totalk about that through the season. we will talk about it a lot today. the rules packs and the down force and thelimited amount of power it is about momentum. when you get through a set of corners welland get speed down the straightaway that carries you all the way down and through the nextcorner you can continue to pass cars. >> kyle larson on the high line able to getby the 1 of elliot sadler. we will a see kyle larson run probably higherline be that anybody on this racetrack as he will search for grip around this mile anda half. >> kyle busch in the middle of the racetrack.

seeing if he can get a run on the 19 of suarez. the whole goal of running in the middle orover the top is to center the speed and center the corner. >> options. that's what makes this racetrack toe muchfunnings. these drivers have options. as they enter the corner they don't followeach other's tire tracks. whatever line daniel suarez takes, kyle buschgoes maybe to the third lane -- up two grooves. and look at the momentum he carries throughthe front stretch.

>> look at the speed down the straightaway. suarez has no choice bowe but to give himthe line. we'll see if suarez on the bottom or in themiddle can run the same speed or quicker. right here -->> caution comes out. >> the caution does come out. it looks like the 70. derrike cope, has got into the wall. the right side smashed. >> right front tire coming off.

>> heavy damage there. you see not just sheet metal but the rightfront tire is definitely not pointed in the right direction. >> he was running 35th at the time of contact. let's see if we can see what happened. >> all by himself. some sort of failure, whether it is the rightfront tire or some sort of problem with the success essential. but obviously drove into the torner and justdid not turn.

>> up into the wall he went, bringing outthe first caution after six completed laps at chicagoland. kyle busch just taking the lead away fromdaniel suarez. suarez was out front for the first four laps. kyle busch has led the last two. and kyle busch, after starting on the insideand losing the lead to daniel suarez on the outside, and then taking the lead away fromdaniel suarez on the outside, would you anticipate to see him restart on the outside? >> i was surprised he started on the insideat the start of the race.

with the multiple groove racetrack i go beingable to carry momentum out of the corner, if you have grip the middle is where you wantto be. again, when you are side by side with thecar on the inside you are taking the air off his spoiler, making the car not drive so well. i will be shocked if he took the inside onthis restart. >> they will double them up two by two oncedebris is completely cleared off the racetrack after coming off of the 70 of derrike cope. looks like everyone is going to stay out. pit road is open.

that momentum pays off for daniel suarez. >> look how fast 18 of kyle busch ran around3 and 4. he is looking to catch the 19. suarez is going cross him over. turn 1. that's aggressive for teammates early. zig and zagging on the straightaway. >> i was wondering how kyle busch got on theoutside. i was certain he was going on the inside.

next thing i know he was trying the outside. >> looking low as we ride along with suarez,who goes up the racetrack to catch it. you mentioned teammates and running aggressively,how about that move. >> that was the 18 just putting his frontbumper unthooet the rear butcher of his teammate. had to turn right. otherwise he would have spun out. good thinking. watch here. they never touch.

it's just they get so close it pulls the airoff the back of the spoiler of the 19 car. cars starts to come around he has to liftand take it up the racetrack. >> kyle busch drove it into the corner aswe see the 2 -- >> paul menard, left rear tire is down. menard is trying to get it to pit road. and the green flag stays out. does. >> does a good job getting to pit road. that can be dangerous when you have to drivingacross the field.

he was in eighth before he had the tire issue. >> the spotter did a good job giving him allthe information he needed. >> a left side tire for menard going down. zand zan calling hmm down pit road. they are going to make a left side tire changeonly hoping to get him back out on the racetrack trying to stay on the lead lap. an unfortunate set of circumstances. >> it is unfortunate. with the competition caution coming at approximatelylap 25, if he can stay the first car a lap

down he can get the free pass. we'll see. sometimes nascar extends when the competitioncaution comes out because of that early caution. they don't want that to happen. they want it to happen on lap 25. >> it is a been fun to watch daniel suarezin the fourth position. we rode aalong with him a moment ago. his crew chief said we are honestly approachingthis weekend as if it is a chase race. you see him being aggressive.

this is the car he ran at charlotte earlierthis year. they want to run it in the chase. it hasn't run since may. he says we had to bring it back out and double-checkit. something that dive mentioned in the prerace,very much on the mind of the 19 team, same tires for texas and homestead. he said we might learn something today thatmight help us win a championship in miami. he says as a crew chief you have got to learnwhenever they can. >> you don't get a lot of track time.

the fact that you know you are going to runthis tire later in the chase, we talk a lot about tracks and how similar they are. what tire you bring can be just as important. trying to learn something about that tirecould help them late they are year snits amazing how some teams like certain tires. they always run well on a certain kind ofirtoo much of it's hard to quantify that. but there is no doubt that some drivers havemore success on a particular tire than others. >> left side of the screen, the chase bubble. the points as they are on the track.

armstrong right now 29 points behind blakecook who is currently in the 12th and transfer spot. he will be fighting for a championship ifhe can stay in the top 12. drivers that are in the top 12 will have ayellow bar underneath their name as they scroll across the top. the ones who have won a race and guaranteedto advance they have a green bar underneath their names. that's the way the ticker will work acrossthe top as we take a quick break. we'll be back before the competition cautionfrom chicagoland.

these two made a little bit of contact. it makes you wonder if that's what he thetire went down. >> rarely do you see what happens on the racetrack. you see here exiting turn 2 they get veryclose. it to me looks like the left rear of the 2makes contact with the 48. now the competition caution. >> competition caution we were told is goingto be coming out around lap 25. sure enough, 25 laps completed. as we are on lap 26, the competition cautioncomes out.

it is the second caution of this race. derrike cope got into the wall early on andbrought out the first caution. now these drivers will have the opportunityto come to pit road. and they now can add fuel. if they would have come to pit road earlywhier they could have just made adjust its to the car, different tires if they wanted. but they couldn't add fuel until this competitioncaution. >> what i've seen so far this this race, alot of these xfinity races we've seen kyle busch driving away from the field.

so far, kyle larson, elliot sadler have hangon with him. with these cars so equal at this point inthe race who can make the best adjustment, who can do just a little bit better will bea huge part in this race. >> let's listen in to the radio of kyle busch. said just moments ago. >> i was letting them catch back up. make a race of it. i wasn't pushing that hard. >> 42 of kyle larson if you want to listenin to that, and maybe make bigger adjustments

than you think. those are some of the games that drivers do. kyle busch is thinking basically don't showyour hand, don't allow larson that you are good enough and let them keep working on theircar. >> why not show it? if i have speed left i'm not going to tellanybody. i'm going to keep that to myself. >> if you are the crew chief, you are thinkinghow do i make my car faster because he is not able to run away from these guys and makeadjustments, and kyle will say, nope, i don't

need any adjustments. on to pit road, kelly. >> for elliot sadler, in the 1 car it soundedlike his car got better and better as the run went on. he is asking for more front grip. he said entry and exit were good, just tightin the center. he is going to get four fresh good year tiresand fuel. >> don't make a big adjustment. daniel suarez says he is everywhere, worsein traffic.

those guys that do well here have a good chancein race. >> how many of the tires are falling off becausewe are seeing guys running on a different path on the track. >> at texas homeland homestead you see falloff. this weekend this good year tire holds onpretty long. 42, i haven't seen him run the bottom yet. when the 18 came, he went right to the bottom. and 42 committed to the top. see why there, the speed he carries comingfrom the top.

check out the right front fender of the 88. if this gets pushed in just enough it couldcause damage to the tire. but they made his car so much better handlingwiseon the pit stop he didn't want to bring it in and after the smoke sort of cleared hedecided to stay out. the team is evaluating how quickly they needto bring him in. >> i talked to the crew chief for joey logano. he said we hit a restart on how we approachthe mile and a half track. they are coming in with a different mentality. right now the evaluation is car is too tightespecially in 1 and 2.

this was joey a moment ago. on this run right now struggling in 1 and2. in 3 and 4 he said he is little bit free. handling differently at different ends ofthe track. >> marty, it has been an eventful day forbrandon jones. it began in dwaul qualifying when he scrubbedthe wall on his very first lap. because of that, he didn't get a qualifyinglap in. had to start at the tail end of the field. had such a good race car at the drop of thegreen he made his way into the top 20.

had to serve a penalty after he overshot hisbox and had an extra man over the wall to help push him back. yet he is showing he has speed. this is what the team wants to do. they want to go into the chase with momentum. the crew chief told me this week he said weare giving it everything to see exactly how much speed we will have when we get to theplayoffs and it really counts. >> when we get to the playoffs. the chase begins in kentucky, very next racefor the xfinity series.

>> we mentioned the 33. mike was mentioning the recovery. daniel suarez has moved up 16 positions sincethe restart all the way into the ninth position. >> i love this camera shot, riding along. see how quickly they catch the slower carsand have to make a decision which line you want to go in, the top or the bottom. you hope the slower cars pick a line, andstay in that line. look at the speed. look at the grand stand side.

>> 180 in turn 3. that's the slower end of the racetrack. >> we talked about the recovery for danielsuarez. a host of problems sill on the 19 car. he is reported a vibration. then he said something feels wrong with therear end. tight and loose at different ends of the racetrack. and now the vibration has seemingly gone awayfor daniel suarez who continues to make progress despite the damage he got on pit road earlier.

>> sometimes you can have arrow damage andyou flutter down the wind. you know when you open one window on the freewayand you get that pulse. that can happen, when the fender is looseit can move and shutter in the wind and that can feel like a vibration of the engine tothe driver. >> daniel suarez, again, after the issue onpit road has rebounded. currently in the top ten. running ninth. trying to close the gap between he and joeylogano. riding along with joey logano looking backon daniel suarez.

and joey logano, i know ath isn't a bad position. but this 22 penske car, is yet to win a race. he doesn't come down from the sprint cup seriesto run eighth. his goal is to be up front running with kylebusch andcal. we haven't seen it out of this car. >> we talked about it early in the year. they changed their program to make it so it'smore like the tough cars. they have to reverse that. they are going to focus on the xfinity seriesand they are not -- when you don't run well

you don't learn anything. even though the car is the same they are notable to take the information they are hoping to dak outs of it. >> junior motor sports has found speed overthe year. sadler and allgaier. junior motor sports, i know it's not namedthe same but it has a lot of tieings to hendricks motor sports. and how about their xfinity drivers, runningcurrently third through sixth. >> what a season it has been for elliot sadler.

top ten 22 times already this season. ties his career best having run this manyraces. debating with his crew chief to go back onchanges they made on pit road last time. they say a wedge hurt his entry and exit. but then he thought maybe the car was comingto him. now he is saying they may need to go back. they are in debate mode what to do next timethey are on pit road. >> elliot sadler currently third. the 41-year-old out of virginia.

now they are getting lapped. >>cal goes down to the apron to pass the # 3of brandon jones. >> normally we see kyle busch when he hasa car like this stretch a lead over the field. these two have a lead of over 4.5 secondsover elliot sadler. but kyle busch andcal are going to be racingfor a sprint cup championship starting tomorrow in their sprint cup cars. this is a precursor. cal has been good at this track, running thetop, and not letting kyle busch guilty away in the xfinity race.

>> kyle larson told mike shepard he said weare good at the end of the run. if you can help me at the running of the runit's too he froo. they are going to make an air pressure adjustment. >> and kyle busch feels like from the centerof the corner to the exit of the corner his car is difficult to turn. the good year tires that they have on it alreadyhave an air pressure adjustment in them. he will get a full tank of fuel. >> track is getting loose in 3 and 4. but entry and exit in 1 and 2 with fine.

>> ryan reed doesn't make to it pit road. we had mentions that was going to be an issue,guys trying to get to pit road under green flag conditions. it's very difficult to get onto this pit road. >> the reason it's difficult is because thecommitment cone is so hard to see. you cannot see that commitment cone untilyou are almost all the way off of turn 4, approaching pit road. when you are in the middle of the corner youcan't see the commitment cone. you keep think you are going the see it andtrying to carry speed.

you see it and then it's too late to slowdown. the 16 of ryan reed on the racetrack, tryingto get slowed down. sees it now. too much rear brake. tries to get on the brakes too hard to slowdown to make that commitmentpins the car out. >> and right by him goes the 18 of kyle buschas he is spinning to get onto pit road. so the third caution of the afternoon hascome out. there have been 11 lead changes between sixdifferent drivers. that all taking place for the most part underthese green flag pit stop conditions.

kyle busch has been out front for 65 laps. we are questioning, though, getting onto pitroad, kyle busch goes to the left of the 97 of jordan anderson. you are not allowed to pass to the left gettinginto your pit stall until you are three boxes away. >> the way we understand the rule is thatyou can turn left approaching your pit box, you know, to get to your pit box, but thishappened so early on pit road. you can pass cars leaving but not gettingon to pit road. nascar has an interesting call.

>> and 97 is not running for position. and running slower than pit road speed. how is the rule enforced? under caution when you are come in for leadlap cars? this has been a point since kentucky. nascar says basically, you can't pass to theleft on pit road entry, so they penalized the 78 there. >> they will be looking at that 18. and what he just did on pit road under thegreen flag pit stops.

the 16 of ryan reed once again bringing outthe caution. there were 11 cars on the lead lap when thecaution came out. as they have cycled through with the pit stops,right now kyle busch being shown as the race leader. when we went away we were talking about kylebusch's pass on the left. it was the 97 of jordan anderson who was actuallycoming out of his pit stop and back onto pit road and exiting and kyle was coming in. and nascar says because they were not comingin at the same time, as jordan was leaving pit road and kyle was coming on, there wasno penalty.

>> lot of questions tomorrow in the driver'smeeting. i will be the first to say i thought i understoodthe rules clearly after the 78, no passing to the left. but nascar is saying the 97 already pitted. i agree. a lot of questions will be asked in the driversmeeting. that's what happens with rules. the rules have to be defined and decided howthey are enforced and if they are going to make exceptions to the rule.

that he was not in any of the racing grooves. free pass is going to go to the 44 of j.j. yeley. the last one went to the 33 of brandon jones. and with more on ryan seeing let's go to dave. >> the last time he came down pit road undergreen he was too fast understanding. under 4,000 rpm by his taco meter. he is going to back it down to 3900 the nexttime he has to come down on speed. he is going to top off one more time on fuel.

here's the big thing. by going to the back of the line here as theyrun, he has lost about half of his points gap to clements and armstrong who both runin front of him here now. at this point, seeing is in a more tenuousposition. >> just 14 points separating the two now,ryan seeing in 12th. and dakoda armstrong in 13th. but 14 points separate the two. >> back the rpm down to 37, 3600 for whatryan seeing is trying to do. still 14 to the good but you want to limitthose mistakes and not give armstrong an opportunity

to pass you. >> we talked about brandon jones and all thetrouble he has had. remember you mentioned he got the free passthe caution before. that still means when you get that free passyou have to start at the tail end of the longest now he gets to pull all the way back up. and there is only 12 cars on the lead lap. he will restart in 12th position, as opposedto being in 12th restarting in the 30th position. >> last time everyone was on pit road the62 got a speeding penalty. we heard about that from brendan gaughan.

look at the comparison from last year. last year there were speed sections, thisyear there is 14 speed sections. the longest section is 128 feet. a year ago it was 251 feet that separatedthose lines. >> rick just to be clear, this is how nascarcalculates the speed. they don't use a radar gun. it's basically time over distance. so there is these loops. what nascar used to have on pit road in 2015you would see a handful of red lines, loops

cut in theres they are electronic. they know when a car passed over it and calculatedthe next time they get to the next line. they have added more loops to make more callpit boxes on pit road. it was a simple calculation, but the issueis, the smaller the loops are, the give and take is gone. if you make a mistake and are too fast inone of those sections, you don't have as much distance to give the speed back. >> when they are entering the pit box theyare accelerating. and when they are leaving they are going asfast as they can.

if you are the guy on the outside you musthave a tremendous amount of security with that car on corner entry. >> close call for 42, kyle larson, as he wasworking his way up the track. and it was daniel suarez that was right therethis in front of them. those two fairly close. looks as though larson may have gotten intothe wall. >> definitely got into the wall. he lost the car and had to chase it up theracetrack. and he did get into the wall.

talk about how aggressive kyle larson is. that's a good example. >> and on that restart, nascar did come overthe radio and warn the 1 team to stay even with kyle busch. he was back about half a car length for therestart. but they let him know, you have to stay evenwith that lead car. joey logano looking ahead to the 42, kylelarson. doesn't look like a lot of damage to the rightrear after brushing the wall. >> doesn't look like a lot of damage.

the 42 just looks loose. doesn't look like he can commit to eitherthe throttle or the steering wheel. to make it easier, you see here it slidesup in front of the 19 a couple laps ago. just -- he makes contact for sure with theoutside wall. >> another vantage point here. that right here quarter panel is sensitiveto drivability with the race car. if you get the right rear quarter panel bentthe wrong way it doesn't have as much side force and the car doesn't drive anywhere nearas good. >> nascar warning the 1 of elliot sadler thathe needed to stay up with the race leader

as they were entering the restart zone. >> they want them door to door. they don't want anybody lagging back. >> kyle larson has said yes something is wrong. spotter said you might have a right rear goingown. something definitely wrong with the 42 car. teammate brennan poole going by him rightnow. right now, maybe a right rear going down forthe 42. staying out so far, to make sure that's thecase.

and the 16 just kept coming up the racetrack,coming up the racetrack. and larson didn't want to lift. right here, you can see it was pretty highup the racetrack, larson against the wall. can't go any her. 16 cars pushes him up. into the wall. that's a spot where either one of them couldhave prevented that wreck. they have a throttle in there. oh, turned left and got into the right rearquarter panel.

>> 42 coming off the wall. >> looks like he got loose. >> yeah. >> watching it from that view, looked likethe 42 got loose. when he got loose that shoved the left front,the whole front of the car went down and got into the side of the 16 of ryan reed. two cars running side by side, arrow dynamicallythey are not anywhere as good as when they are by themselves. >> 16 on pit road.

assessing the damage. doing their best to try to repair it hereon pit road. there has been conversation about pullingit behind the wall and going to the garage. the damage looks too extensive here i shouldsay on the front end of the race car, especially on the right side. team going to work but it is pretty severe. the window net already down for ryan reedas he anticipates going to the garage. >> he is in the lane up there, man. >> yeah, i think that's ryan reed saying hefelt that he had given the lane to kyle larson.

at first we thought the 16 had come up. then that angle looking down the back stretch. it's the curved back stretch wall. hard to get a reference. 42, looks like it got tight, comes back, itlooked a little loose and looked like it came we saw a couple cars coming down pit road,clint bowyer, justin allgaier, now the leaders have to decide what they want to do. are they going to continue to stay out andrisk having to pit under the green or is now the time to make their second pit of the day.

>> let's listen in to the 42 after what happenedon the track. >> i don't know what's up there. he ran into me off 4. tried to run into me off 2. >> so kyle is thinking that the 16 was cominginto him when he was going through 1 and 2. >> you could see the 16 was on the bottomof the racetrack, kyle larson was there. kyle slowed down to make sure they didn'tget together. and then they made contact off of turn 2. initially kyle looked to me he slowed downto try to prevent contact with reed coming

up the racetrack. later off the corner we clearly saw the 42get into the 16. i saw the back of the car come around first,i don't think kyle larson turned left and intentionally hooked him. the car came around, like you said startedout tight and ended up getting loose. nonlsz he got into the rear quarter panel. >> just past the halfway point. 100 laps complete of the 200 schedules forthis 300-mile race. kyle busch has been out in front for 85.

kyle larson led nine. daniel suarez, five. so they continue to work on the clean up afteronce again the 16 was up into the wall. and that has now opened pit road. and here comes kyle busch. elliot sadler, and the lead lap cars. cal kelly. >> you see the 1 car of elliot sadler. he had been saving fuel.

sounded like he was going to stay out. he is happy with the changes they made lasttime on pit road. he has more rear grip. still a little bit snug on throttle, littlebit snug in the center. >> they can make it on one more stop. daniel suarez as far back as 31st today. said the car is a little bit free on entry,tight on exit. they are going to fix with it air pressure. >> erik jones says his car is tight on restarts.

they will get four good year tires, fuel. kyle busch, four tires and fuel as well. he will not be the first one off pit road. >> it's elliot sadler. two tire stop. ryan preece gained nine spots by not changingtires. the new ford escape. life is a sport. we are the utility.

and those two working together have movedout into first and second. >> kyle larson about four rows back went aren'tthe 1 and 2, he had momentum. he is going the climb the banking in 3 and4 to try to get to the outside of 88. >> nascar is taking another look at the restart. it is under review. >> three wide into turn 16789 it's hard forthe 20 car, erik jones to make that work. when you swer the corner that shallow it'shard to get the car the turn. >> suarez was in the middle. suarez now trying to battle with elliot sadlerfor position.

erik jones is going to follow him. >> jeff, we were a little surprised to seeawful these cars come to pit road. we thought the 7, 88, cars that pitted tenlaps going they were going to stay out. while they didn't change tires ten laps ago,they put fuel in, we thought that was going to be their strategy. >> logano did stick with that strategy andstayed out. all the other guys bailed out on the strategyand pitted with the leaders. >> 3 of ty dillon making the move around the7 of justin allgaier. the lead heating up now.

here comes kyle busch looking to the insideof joey logano. side by side at the line. and it's kyle busch now out front again. logano had been running consistently in thetop ten, but really struggling to get past sixth or seventh on the racetrack. trying a little bit of pit strategy, or notcoming to pit road to get the lead, clean air. but now he's dropped back to second and willhavist hands full with the 19 of daniel suarez who is closed the gp.

>> what a recovery by daniel suarez. had that accident on pit road early in therace. had to pit a second time to repair the fenders. rallied back to battle the 22 for the secondposition. >> as that fight for second continues let'sgo into the garage and mike massaro. >> during our commercial break, ryan reedwas able to look at the replay of what transpired on the racetrack, when you saw the replaywhat did you think? >> i thought it was really tight. it's hart to see.

looked like he tagged me. it was tight racing. i should have lifted gotten out of there. he was on my door tight coming out of 2 there. you know, he probably should have gave methe spot. he was probably upset, he had gone into thewall earlierer and was fighting back. he didn't want to give me the room. i understand his frustration. but it sucks we tore up the race car on lap100.

i felt like -- we had the spotter, almosthad him cleared there, and looked like he came off the wall and tagged me, and he hadenough. part of the deal. we'll move on to kentucky. we have got the chase to focus on. i'll watch the rest of this race on my xfinityx-1 app and see if there is not something i can learn. >> short day for ryan reed. he had been running inside the top 15.

now in the garage. >> another caution. this time it's fluid in turn 2 that has broughtthe caution out. field will stack back up again behind thetoyota camry pace car. they will go two by two once again for therestart. that time, it was the 22 of joey logano whochose the outside line and was able to make it work. but then the 18 of kyle busch, little bitstronger, fresher tires, was able to get by. gun a, in the 62, will get the free pass.

the last restart that was under review bynascar was deemed good. working on a little bit of fluid down in thelower groove in turns 1 and 2. as they clean that up, we'll take a quickbreak and be back for the restart here at chicagoland.. gilman: go get it, marcus. >>> next saturday nigh nbcsn, the first raceof the xfinity series chase. will be at kentucky speedway. that coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. eastern.

and we want to take a look at this week'sford drive to the championship chase standings. before the chase gets underway. erik jones, elliot sadler, daniel suarez allwith wins. they will receive bonus points as the pointswill be reset before that race in kentucky, the first race of the xfinity series chase. right now, the battle still on for the 12thspot. blake cook 25 points in front of dakoda armstrong. ty dillon and the 3 running seventh todayin this xfinity series race. big news coming out of rcr, especially regardingthe xfinity series.

on nbcsn earlier today, right after qualifying,richard childress came on and made the announcement that daniel hemric would be running full timein the xfinity series in 2017. the an an his north carolina native who grewup with the dillon boys will now race for richard childress. >> a good racer. a lot of short tracks around the southeast. he made the chase in the truck series thisyear. it will be a good move for him and rcr. more young talent at rcr, that's good.

>> good for the series. and a prominent owner committed to the series. keep promoting young talent. dave, what's going on with the 39 team. >> he pitted here. and the crew chief who calls himself a consultantexplained it this way. >> the safe thing to do is get tires and fuel. otherwise we'll have about a 15 high pressurelap window of possibility where we would be 15 laps having short pits.

so i think it's safe to do it in this situation. >> have to pit one more time. they have a set of sticker tires remaining,and of course they will take fuel. >> and a 19-point lead for ryan seeing asyou see the rows as we get ready for the restart. kyle busch and joey logano making up one row. logano on the inside. green flag in the air. >> outside line with the 20 of erik jonesreally good job of timing it getting into the back of the 18, giving him a push.

but 19 pushing the 22. >> good run for the 3 of ty dillon. gaining two position, maybe three on thisrestart as he look to the inside of the 19. trying to get by daniel suarez as well. fih ty dillon with a great restart. >> kyle larson trying to find a place whereno one else is jumps up on the outside the make it three wide. >> momentum running for the 42 up high. >> kyle busch out front.

elliot sadler. joey logano, kyle larson the top five. >> you know the 42 has been gott good on thetop on older tires. it's surprising he can make the top lane workhere on fresh tires on the restart. >> and he almost gets into the wall againoff turn 2. >> how about the 22 falling back, though,after starting on that front row, erik jones and elliot sadler both able to get by nowthe 42 -- oh, again the wiggle there. 42 of kyle larson was able to get by. daniel suarez.

>> struggle with the pit strategy. the 22 stayed out. he has older tires. that's going to hurt him. >> i'm sure he thought more people were goingto stay out with him. he was the only one that pitted early. and didn't stick with that strategy. that didn't create any separation betweenhim and the guys that have the new tires. >> bowyer goes by in the 88.

here comes justin allgaier in the 7. kyle larson, kyle busch, clint bowyer, joeylogano, all in the top ten. look. little rubbing there. >> that was close. the 22 was coming up the racetrack and joeylogano and daniel suarez was there. at the may have contact. when you get book the back of somebody, theright rear quarter panel sometimes that cannot work out well as we saw in the corner earlier.

the two fine a way to work it out. >> outside. >> gap between kyle busch and erik jones,8/10 of a second for the lead. see again the 22 and the 19 pretty close toeach other. >> joey assumed wars was going to be higheron the racetrack off turn 4. suarez was not using all the racetrack andthey got together. >> laps continuing to wind down for this 300miler, 200 laps from chicagoland. the last race of the regular season for thexfinity series. after this one, it will be 12 drivers thatwill be able to fight for the championship.

we ride along with joey logano. the eyes looking, with up in the mirror ashe has the 7 of justin allgaier all over the back of him you can see the ump abouts. helmet moving around. how rough this track is. >> joey logano lost the bottom of the racetrack. he drove in there and he tried to carry speedto the middle of the corner. his car just will not stay where it needsto. doesn't have the handling like they need iton the 22.

>> kyle larson moved up to fourth, marty. >> and rick, here comes that 42 once againfor kyle larson. and they did check that damage from earlier,the right rear quarter panel is fine. they knocked it out a little bit. the left rear is fine as well. he said i don't know what happened, but thecall is all of a sudden very tight. remember he has been loose much of this race. one thing for sure, the 42 the kyle larson,he has been very aggressive this afternoon. >> he has been exceptionally aggressive.

this is what we talked about with kyle larson. we all love to watch him race. et cetera a so much fun to watch him becausehe treats every lap like it's the last lap, but thinking about tomorrow's race, can youafford to do this, to be in the wall twice, to be in the side of other cars. today he has nothing to lose lks but goinginto tomorrow he has to think about that. points matter. you can't afford bad races. >> one of the other variables that will comeinto play tomorrow when he is running in the

sprint cup series is restarts. he had this to say about restarts in the xfinityseries. >> not good on restarts. >> 10-4, we'll relay the message. >> so kyle larson running fourth. made the comment about the engine is not verygood, not pulling very well on the restart. >> that's -- you know, that's some of thetricks to restarting, especially in the xfinity series. these cars are restricted down a little biton horse power.

and it's really hard to get them rolling. it's very important them to accelerate. sounds like kyle larson doesn't feel likehis is accelerating as quick as it should. >> larson continuing to run right up againstthe wall. daniel suarez closing the gap now as he hascaught up to the 42. suarez, pretty good rebound after the issuegetting off of pit road, the damage that was done to both sides of that number 19. made his way back up into the top five. >> difficult if you are suarez running behindlarson.

he is running in the top over in 1 and 2,all the way against the wall. suarez on the bottom of the racetrack. now he has no arrow disadvantage because nobodyis in front of him in the middle of 1 and 2. he makes up the grounds on 1 and 2. then as they go to 3 and 4, they both go tothe bottom. so that really hurts suarez in 3 and 4. now he has that car in front of him, losesdown force, the car doesn't make the grip he wants it to make.

it won't surprise me if we see suarez quicklymove to the outside of 3 and 4 to try to get that clean air. >> we'll see what strategy suarez uses askyle busch continues to lead. you will see it all as we go nascar non-stop. ♪♪ kyle busch, the 2015 champion! ♪♪ toyota. >>> welcome back to chicago, illinois. tomorrow on nbcsn, the first race of the chase. the sprint cup series racing from chicagoland.

the pole for tomorrow's race will go to kylebusch, who is leading this xfinity race. and won the camping world truck series racelast night. he has swept the truck and xfinity seriesraces in the same weekend 12 times before. >> not just before, rick. but with qualifying canceled due to weather,all 16 chase drivers will take the front eight rows. it couldn't be any better for the drop ofthe green flag. >> it will definitely be exciting from thedrop of the green flag all the way until the checkers.

as that will be the first opportunity forchase drivers to get a win and secure their position in the round of 12. erik jones still able to stay out in frontof the 42. >> not going to be long, though. that 42 is coming quickly. he has been about .3 of a lap quicker thanerik jones. caught him quickly. we've seep this consistently with kyle larson. he is better on long runs in the cup racesand the xfinity races, especially on the top

groove races, he gets the top line moving. makes a bold move to the bottom. he gets the top line working and it is amazinghow fast he can go on long runs. >> he says the car is worse this run. it's more sluggish -- his word, sluggish,but tight. tighter conditions for that 42 car. yet he is still finding time and making speed. still doing good and getting around the 20car. >> what i like is he is not committed to thetop on both ends of the racetrack.

that last time he ran at the bottom o and4. goes down to the white line. the goal is to use the momentum to get tothe outside of the 20. i think if he could get to the outside, hewould easily clear. >> they will all get one more shot at makingadjustments to the cars as they have to pit at least one more time for fuel before theend of this race. >> drivers talking about clean air and theimportance of clean air. this is it right here. kyle larson ran him down.

and he got to this this distant and tauldstalled out. he hasn't been able to make more ground up. it's hard when your car makes list grip. and that's why you want to be where kyle buschis. obviously everybody wants to be leading therace, but it's such an advantage to be ahead of the pack. >> erik just put his hand up on the wheel,where are you lapped cars going? i need that line, need to be in that positiongetting into turn 1. for erik jones, this is his only shot.

moving up to sprint cup next year with furniturerow. announced earlier they are going to add asecond time. won and done in the truck series. now he has a same chance in the xfinity series. >> how about that, a metric rise for the 20and erik jones. winning a championship in the truck series,the very next year, potentially winning a championship in the xfinity series, and movingonto the cup series. >> lot of young drivers in the country lookup to erik jones as an example of how if you win races on local level, if you do it theright way you will get that shot.

it's hard for young drivers but they lookat him and say he won his way to the front. it wasn't because he had sponsors, becauseof any of that. he had talent. it's how he has done it. he won championships, won races. he is the example they all look up to. >> rick, that xfinity series chase startsnext week. five of the seven tracks in it are close tothe same shape and size as the chicagoland speedway.

erik jones says i personally like mile anda half tracks and my team does very good at them. he to could get that second championship ina row. >> elliot sadler, since taking two tires hecalls his car a ten out of ten. things looking up for the 1 car. >> how about daniel suarez. contacted on pit road at the beginning ofthe day. goes back to 35. the car much better.

as it stands right now, they will go intothe chase as the number three seed. the crew chief talked about bringing his bestcars to the chase. he said next week at ken condition they aretaking the michigan winning car, the best car in the fleet. >> justin allgaier would love to pick up hissecond win on his home track here at chicagoland. he started out so strong, which is unusualfor a new team. he says not that they have become come placent,but the last couple of races has been about making changes to see what they can do toget better heading into chase. right now allgaier saying he is tighter onthis run on these tires than he was the last

time out. behind him, we will he see the 3 of ty dillon. they came to chicago with a completely differentpackage than they have ever run before. they found some speed in the simulator andwere excited to see how it would play out here. ty wanted some changes. it's getting tight. and crew chief is telling him to get ready. we are going to short pit you to try to makeup spots.

>> short pitting, coming in before everyoneelse to change the pressure in those tires. we go nascar non-stop. and you won't have to guess when we'll turnup. because after all we should fit into yourlife. not the other way around. you have seen kyle busch out front. has about a .of a second lead as we look atthe toyota driver update. first, second, and fifth for kyle busch, erikjones, and daniel suarez, all out of joe gibbs racing.

kyle busch has been dominant. 124 laps led of the 147. there will be green flag pit stops comingup. they will be coming up fairly soon. we heard the strategy potentially for the3 car of ty dillon. maybe short pitting, coming a little bit earlierand trying to take advantage of the fresher tires. we were listening in to elliot sadler momentsago as far as strategy on the track. >> trying to run the top.

what do you think, is that better or worse? is this you were slower up there. that's where the 20 is running. 18 is running top. 42 top. we can learn from it. >> spot her saying top, top. what that means is they are running the topin turns 1 and 2 and the top in turns 3 and 4.

elliot sadler knows they are running thatin both ends of the racetrack. you heard elliot sadler say it was fasteron the bottom but these guys are quicker. even though he is slower, he is saying runthe top, learn what your car can do up there ultimately that's where we need to be to twinrace. >> green flag pit stops getting underway. clint bowyer in the 88. erik jones has closed the gap to 4/10 of asecond between kyle busch and erik jones. >> rick, he gave up seventh place to comeinto pit road. he said i'm in a box.

it's loose here but hasn't turned the wayi need it to. a chassis adjustment, track bar adjustment,four fresh tifrs, last fill of snowo fuel and see what he can make up from here. >> i like that strategy, getting on pit roadearly to take advantage of fresher tires. >> it is a going to be a cat and mouse gamefor the three leaders to see who goes to pit road first. if he can beat the other car by one lap hewill be the leader. >> ty dillon said his car was bottoming outharder and getting freer. the crew has given hip four fresh tires.

>> air pressure, four tires, and fuel. >> the 1 of elliot sadler started a ten outof ten tight but got better. he says it's tight through the nilg and off. the team promising to make it better. you see a chassis adjustment and hoping thatfour tires instead of two will help him. >> paul menard had to rally back from an earlyrace incident when he had a tire go down. made his way inside the top 15. air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel. >> the fastest car the last ten laps or so.

he says the car was too tight. they are going to make an air pressure adjustmenttrying to free it up like it was earlier in the race. >> justin allgaier said he was tight on thisrun as well. they made a slight chassis ajusticement andthey will give him four good year tires, snow fuel. >> joey logano on pit road said the car istoo tight at the 2/3 point of the corner. he said they went too far on the last adjustment. >> erik joneso has the cub crew of denny hamlin.

they will try to beat the cub kree of kylebusch. time is 11 seconds for a four tire stop. boy, they exit just the way they came in. >> daniel suarez with the cup crew of carledwards. loose entry, tight in the center, loose onexit. they made an adjustment trying to change thesettings going into the corner and off of >> kyle larson being told he has to servethe a penalty for speeding on pit road. >> 42 came to pit road a lap before the 18of kyle busch. kyle busch was more efficient on and off pitroad.

so right now, without kyle larson, with thatpenalty, kyle larson off, nowhere near, it enables kyle busch to take it a lib easier. he doesn't have to take full advantage ofthat speed, save a little bit of tire. because, remember, at the end of that run,we saw erik jones running him down. kyle busch has got to have in the back ofhis head that erik jones is a little better at the end of the run. maybe save little tire here at the start ofthe run to be better at the end. >> it could be ironic in the situation oferik jones chasing down the 18 of kyle busch. because the reason that eric jones is evenin a race car in the upper tier of nascar

is because of kyle busch. kyle busch was racing against erik jones. jeff, you had mentioned at a local short trackin the snowball derby. a very big race for late models. and kyle busch actually got beat by erik jonesin the late model car. and kyle went to joe gibbs and said, thiskid's legit. he's good. as the caution comes out. kyle said, you have to hire this kid.

we've got to get this kid in a truck or acar at the highest level because he's got that talent. so kyle busch actually hired him and put himinto a truck. >> erik jones goes on, wins the truck serieschampionship. now in the xfinity series. potentially could win the championship inthe xfinity series. and then will be moving to the cup seriesnext season. >> this caution will help kyle larson. he was able to stay on the lead lap, currentlyin the 14th position.

looks like one or two cars that need to goto pit road. he should line up 11th or 12th on the restart. with 40 to go, i am not sure he will recoverbut at least he has closed back up to the leaders. >> 42 has dug himself into a hole. fast race car. he tried to get by suarez and carried so muchspeed, he couldn't hold it. gets into the wall, damages the right rearquarter panel. and then put him in this position.

he was racing with ryan reed. turn 2, right quarter panel of ryan reed. more damage to his car. and after running the leaders down, come downpit road under green, caught speeding. three miss taiks today for kyle larson. those are mistakes he cannot afford in tomorrow'srace. the quality of competition here today is tough. but not arizona tomorrow. it's harder to overcome these problems inthe sprint cup race.

>> this is what kyle larson had to say onthe radio after the speeding penalty. >> barely flashed to red. now that the loops are shorter now harderto get away with it. >> good point. >> it has affected a lot of people. we have seen a fike in pit road penalties. it's difficult. we talk about it every race, how fun he isto watch. how fast he is.

all these kinds of thing. he has to find way to bring it down just alittle bit. still keep that speed but bring it down. young race carr -- he is a young race cardriver learning how to manage long races. it is not easy. >> nine speeding penalties already today. the average at this racetrack, 3.7. again, the addition of the speeding linesor speeding zones on pit road definitely has increased the penalties.

but that has been at virtually every track. those speed zones have been added. drivers using what they had done previously,it's not working. that's something we are going to continueto talk about as we see the 1 of elliot sadler peel off from the fourth position to comedown pith pit road. >> there was a debate whether or not theyshould come to pit road. elliot saying whatever you think gives usthe best chance to win this race. forget about points. they want another race headed into the chase.

they are changing the tires now. looks like it will be a four-tire change forthe 1. meanwhile, blake cook is trying to point hisway into the chase. he stretched it out all the way to the endof his fuel run. no adjustments for the 11. just four tires and sunoco fuel. >> the 39 of ryan seeing gives up 1 positions. he got back on the lead lap from that run. he was off strategy from earlier.

ty dillon in the 3. down at the bottom, elliot sadler in the 1was looking to go in the middle, and 42 of kyle larson up top. take a look at this. dillon trying to side draft the 42 to slowhis momentum down. if you can get the right front phenomenoneron the car next to you's left rear quarter panel it stacks all the air on the spoilerand puts drag on that car and slows it down for the straightaway. >> big run for the 42.

coming up behind the 22 of logano. logano goes down low. the 42 goes by on the outside. >> about the same point of the run that wesaw last time where kyle larson's car was not great on new tires. it takes time. doesn't fire off as quick as the other cars. once it gets running, he gets rhythm up topand they see the speed. >> so much time from the start of this restart.

we are already -- he was back 4.5 seconds. it willing going to be hard to overcome that. >> this is the 42/22 just a bit earlier. how close it got. >> kyle larson running ninth. ty dillon in front of him. kyle larson looking to the inside now. >> this is what the 42 needs right here. he needed the 3 to run the bottom.

he had the top lane. he was really good driving off the cornerin the top lane. hopefully this gives him enough momentum tocross the 3 over. >> got a good run on him. kyle larson is going to stay up near the walland try to make the pass. >> ty tried to block him. kyle got there so quickly. when he got to the corner he wasn't able toget to the bottom, the 3 car wasn't. with these cars with less horse power momentumis so important.

if you have to breathe out of the throttleor not go back to the throttle as kickly as you want to it kills your speed. >> you go up to the battle for the lead, the7 of justin allgaier on the wall. and did 20 of erik jones. they have moved up. the leader kyle busch. in the last laps they have closed the lead. all cars within a second. >> brendan gaughan lost a spot to larson inthe 42.

larson continuing to move toward the front. the laps winding down. just 26 to go. not enough time for larson to be able to getup there, reel in the 18 of kyle busch. but kyle busch has his hands full alreadywith justin allgaier and erik jones. >> i don't think kyle busch has seen the lastof erik jones yet. he is trying to work that top end. i agree kyle larson may be the fastest carhere. we don't know.

we haven't seen him battle with kyle buschyet. but with only 25 to go. it is a long ways to go. >> larson, five seconds behind kyle busch. the gap will be half a second behind kylebusch and allgaier. about 8/10 of a second in front of justinallgaier and erik jones, running second and third. let's go to dave burns. >> the 18 of kyle busch of course is not eligiblefor the xfinity chase.

his teammate erik jones is. and jones would like to get around allgaierand the 18 of kyle busch to get the moral victory but also to get the momentum headinginto the chase that a victory would give him. his last win in the series, july 30th at theiowa speedway. >> last yeart scott graves the crew chieffor suarez won the xfinity series with chris beuscher. he says this year since they won in michiganit has been laid-back. caution, kyle busch spun. >> around goes the 18 of kyle busch.

so does the 20 of erik jones. he definitely had a tire issue there on cornerentry. and you can't control it on corner exit. >> those two guys behind him. you don't expect the leader to slow down likethat. they did a nice job to avoid him. >> allgaier ducking to the left. watch this. >> erik jones, how close that is.

>> erik jones is looking at the 7. he is more focused on the 7. and all of a sudden the 7 starts to move downand twlz the 18 in front of arng jones. a good move to miss him. now we see the 7 and 20 making their way onthe pit road. >> justin alexander the crew chief for paulmenard saying take your cues from the leaders. if they come down pit road, follow them. that's chaktly what happened. the call for menard is a two tire change.

they will work on the right side. and taking on sunoco race fuel. >> justin allgaier pits for the lead on hishometown track, he says he was too tight on exit. otherwise good. four fires. >> longer here on the left side, dave. >> erik jones liked his car. he will get four fresh tires and fuel andhead off pit road.

nascar america post race at 6:00. and the last race of the season for the inycar sear. that at sonoma. that begins at 6:30. what a battle they have building between thetwo penske drivers. simon p arc gino and willpower. willpower actually missed the first race ofthe season at st. pete. simon pagino, four wins as well as willpower,on the season. and right now they enter that final race a4 #-point deficit for willpower.

both drivers drive for team penske. so it is a guarantee that penske will winthe championship. it's just a question of which driver. >> pagino has had a great year. a breakout season. didn't have the best first i don't rememberat penske. here in year two seemed to put it together. a whole season-long run. >> pit crew for the 18 came over the walltoo soon.

18 has to start at the back of the field. >> elliot sadler and clint bowyer decidedto stay on the racetrack. they didn't come to pit road. they have older tires. and then you look at two of menard's. the 7 of allgaier. they have fresher tires. >> menard took two tires. justin allgaier, he did four.

so i like the position allgaier is in. in the outside lane. two guys have older tires. what's important is who can get acceleratingwith the old tires, who can get accelerating in the restart zone on this front row? who can lead this race into turn 1? because you are going to have to get awayfrom -- look at the 42 on the outside line. you know he is going high and he is goingto try to get to the front. you have got to build momentum and get itmoving.

>> outside of row 1, clint bowyer in the 88trying to make something happen. elliot sadler on the inside of row 1 as theycome into the restart zone. fanning out behind that front row, three wideas they go into turn 1. >> 7 needed to climb the hill and try to blockthe outside from kyle larson. here comes the 42. three wide up top. >> that is four wide, and one into the wall. it was the # 3 of brandon jones. he got into the wall.

he is still going. -- 33 of brandon jones. the battle for the lead. lgs out front. >> able to drive deep into turn 3. clear of clint bowyer. >> erik jones using the apron, trying to shortenthe racetrack as he goes into turn number 1. getting by the 88 of clint bowyer.

again, the older tires on the 88. he drives through turn 2 and onto the backstretch. >> that will make it easy for kyle larsonin the 42 to clear the 88. still 13 laps to go. a long time for these cars. >> joey logano in the 22. right along the white line. >> we haven't seen our last caution, i wouldsay. a lot of aggressive racing.

now that erik jones crossed the 1 of elliotsadler. he has to get by him quickly. if he can't, kyle larson is going to be comingat a high rate of speed. got to try to find a way around now. >> elliot sadler trying to make that number1 as wide as he possibly can. choose the right line. he is going down low in front of erik jones. and after all this time we have two xfinityregulars at the front of this field. so much talk about larson, busch, logano,but these two i believe are who we are going

to see battle all the way to miami. these are the two championship favorites. >> elliot sadler in a late race battle madea mistake and was able to withstand the battle or the charge coming from denny hamlin. he is used to being in this situation. >> he has to focus out the windshield. the 20, i believe as he gets later in thisrun the top will come in, a couple more laps and that will open up options and it willbe hard for elliot sadler to hold him behind him.

>> there he goes. first move into the middle of the racetracktrying to get the outside to work. let's see if he gains down the back straightaway. >> less than ten laps to go. race for the lead continues. jones is going to run a higher line. sadler ducks down to the bottom of the racetrack. all the while, still closing the gap, the42 of kyle larson. >> elliot has a decision to make right now.

does he go to the top and try to block themomentum or go to the bottom. >> he goes to the bottom. erik jones stays up high. they get bonus points. >> big stake coming. big run. lot of momentum. look to the inside. erik jones goes by as they go into turn 3.

>> it's not done yet. >> up the racetrack he goes. he completes the pass. >> he is on fresh tires. he got a huge lead on third. >> elliot did all he could, got as close tothe 20 as he could, trying to pull it off the spoiler. wasn't enough. >> just eight laps to go.

erik jones, 20-year-old out of michigan outin front. >> i'm impressed. i thought 1 would lose more time than he did. we'll see if we can find speed to stay intouch with the 20. >> right there he guessed that the 20 of erikjones to would go to the top of the racetrack but he went to the bottom of the racetracka. wrong guess by elliot. that's all you can do is try to guess whichdirection he is trying to go in and you you do the opposite.

>> kyle larson has run the fastest latch anyonein the field. back in third. >> is there enough time for kyle larson though? he is one second back. the laps continue to wind down. under seven to go. >> the thing about kyle larson is we haveseen like a light switch. so many times -- not just today, but a lotof times when the top lane gets going it's like a light switch and he takes off.

he will be 3, 4, 5/10 of a second quicker. he is going to need that switch right nowwith only six to go. >> seeing the gap close. this is going to help w. the 1 of elliot sadlerrunning the bottom allows clean air up top. >> trying to take away the high lane, butthe 42 easily by the 1 of elliot sadler now. kyle larson into second. less than six to go. >> remember, early in the race we heard thespotter telling elliot sadler other people were running it but elliot was slower on thetop of the racetrack.

he has to stay on the bottom. his car isn't as fast at the top. >> kyle larson is very good on the longerruns. does he have enough time? the team asked him is the car better on thisshort run? he said one word. better. he is trying to catch him. it is going to be an interesting last fivelaps.

>> he gained.5 of a second on that last lapwhile passing elliot sadler. >> five laps -- now four to go. four laps remaining from chicagoland. >> 2/10 quicker that lap. 2/10 of a sechlkd he is definitely faster. >> erik jones is already the winningest xfinityseries driver this condition season. >> if you are erik jones you have the samedecision to make as elliot sadler. he thinks his car is better down bottom. but 42 he knows is better up top.

when does he move to the top to try to protect. >> the gap was 200 feet. now it's down to 130. >> three laps to go. the gap less than half a second. >> erik jones has moved to the top. switched to the defensive mode. take away the line of the 42. right now erik jones fighting for three bonuspoints, for the win.

he will get three more bonus points to startthe chase. to the bottom of the track goes kyle larson. >> we saw a little while ago kyle larson tryingto slide drive into 1 very, very deep and trying to get in front of the car in frontof him. that's going to have to be his move as erikjones takes the top of the racetrack. >> erik jones stays in front of the 42 asthey go through 1 and 2. down the back stretch. what's the strategy now? does he try to take away that line?

. jo new at 6:00, a sheriff deputy shot lessthan 24 hours after an officer is laid to rest here in our coverage area. how people in shelby are reacting to thatnews that another law enforcement family is going through what they just had to deal with. >>> and scrambling to get gas, how a pipelinein alabama is going to cause a lot of heart attacks for people here in the carolinas. but first, we begin with breaking news abouta fatal bus crash in richmond, county. between 30 and 50 people are in the hospitalnow. the highway patrol says some people have died.

it happened in the westbound lanes of i-74and this photo from the scene, you can see the side of that bus almost completely rippedoff after it ran off the road there into the median. we will find out. we have a crew on the way to the scene andwe'll bring you more information as we get it. >>> now, a developing story about a sheriff'sdeputy shot in the line of duty. state authorities are investigating as nbccharlotte's mike hanson reports. this shooting is having an impact object thepeople a day after the officer was laid to

rest. >> reporter: here in shelby the people arestill trying to recover from the loss of one of their own and now the news that anotherlaw enforcement family is going through a tough time is a reminder, they say, is firstresponders need support. >> he'll always be remembered, but the hurtwill always be here. >> reporter: just hours after north carolinasaid good-bye to a hero, a terrible reminder of the danger lawmen face. a deputy shot in the leg, and the sheriffsays by a man with suicidal thoughts. the deputy identified the detective, was rushedto a hospital.

he is expected to make a full recovery. the man who exchanged gun fire with deputiesand highway patrol died inside his house. >> there are crazy people out there. that is about it. it can happen to anyone, anytime. >> reporter: tonight in shelby, the peopleare still in mourning and they are shocked that another family an hour's drive away isdealing with another shooting so soon. >> it is bad because they're out here tryingto protect us, and they just, you know, get shot for no reason pretty much.

>> reporter: it is unclear just when the memorialwill be taken down, however, he will live on forever in the hearts here. reporting from cleveland county, mike hanson,nbc, charlotte. >> such a sad story. the shelby officer was buried yesterday, aswe reported, and the man accused in his murder is behind bars in the east coast. he chose not to waiver his extradition rightsthat means that a state governor's warrant had to be issued to get him back here, andthat could be a process taking up to two months or so.

look at the race analysis for today's racefrom chicagoland. the race length, 200 lapse. 300 miles on this mile and a half track. it's45 miles per hour on pit road. that is going to be bringing the speeds way down, when theywill be going over 180 or 190 miles an hour on the racetrack. fuel window is 55 to 60laps. >> fuel use may come into play today. thegood year tires seem to be lasting well so the fuel will be stretched we will have acompetition caution on lap 25 due to the weather that came through last night.>> i have set up the undog story of ryan seeing. his small team. when you come down to theoverthe wall crew you will see a variety of uniforms and crew members. the pit box isfrom bk racing. but this group is from four

young, he is not afraid to take kyle buschon. did it early in the race. >> he knows he is in the chase. he has alreadywon, going to advance. he can be more aggressive if he wants to be.>> that's a great sound. when you are driving and your spotters says "new leader "you loveto hear it. you talked about momentum, we use that totalk about that through the season. we will talk about it a lot today. the rules packsand the down force and the limited amount of power it is about momentum. when you getthrough a set of corners well and get speed down the straightaway that carries you allthe way down and through the next corner you can continue to pass cars.>> kyle larson on the high line able to get

by the 1 of elliot sadler. we will a see kylelarson run probably higher line be that anybody on this racetrack as he will search for griparound this mile and a half. >> kyle busch in the middle of the racetrack.seeing if he can get a run on the 19 of suarez. the corner.>> options. that's what makes this racetrack toe much funnings. these drivers have options.as they enter the corner they don't follow each other's tire tracks. whatever line danielsuarez takes, kyle busch goes maybe to the third lane -- up two grooves. and look atthe momentum he carries through the front stretch.>> look at the speed down the straightaway. suarez has no choice bowe but to give himthe line. we'll see if suarez on the bottom

front for the first four laps. kyle buschhas led the last two. and kyle busch, after starting on the inside and losing the leadto daniel suarez on the outside, and then taking the lead away from daniel suarez onthe outside, would you anticipate to see him restart on the outside?>> i was surprised he started on the inside at the start of the race. with the multiplegroove racetrack i go being able to carry momentum out of the corner, if you have gripthe middle is where you want to be. again, when you are side by side with the car onthe inside you are taking the air off his spoiler, making the car not drive so well.i will be shocked if he took the inside on this restart.>> they will double them up two by two once

the third caution of the afternoon has comeout. there have been 11 lead changes between six different drivers. that all taking placefor the most part under these green flag pit stop conditions. kyle busch has been out frontfor 65 laps. we are questioning, though, getting onto pit road, kyle busch goes to the leftof the 97 of jordan anderson. you are not allowed to pass to the left getting into yourpit stall until you are three boxes away. you know, to get to your pit box, but thishappened so early on pit road. you can pass cars leaving but not getting on to pit road.nascar has an interesting call. >> and 97 is not running for position. andrunning slower than pit road speed. how is the rule enforced? under caution when youare come in for lead lap cars? this has been

a point since kentucky. the 78 there.>> they will be looking at that 18. and what he just did on pit road under the green flagpit stops. the 16 of ryan reed once again bringing out the caution. there were 11 carson the lead lap when the caution came out. by auto zone. when we went away we were talkingabout kyle busch's pass on the left. it was the 97 of jordan anderson who was actuallycoming out of his pit stop and back onto pit road and exiting and kyle was coming in. andnascar says because they were not coming in at the same time, as jordan was leaving pitroad and kyle was coming on, there was no penalty.>> lot of questions tomorrow in the driver's

still means when you get that free pass youhave to start at the tail end of the longest line. now he gets to pull all the way backup. and there is only 12 cars on the lead lap. he will restart in 12th position, asopposed to being in 12th restarting in the 30th position.>> last time everyone was on pit road the 62 got a speeding penalty. we heard aboutthat from brendan gaughan. look at the comparison from last year. last year there were speedsections, this year there is 14 speed sections. the longest section is 128 feet. a year agoit was 251 feet that separated those lines. >> rick just to be clear, this is how nascarcalculates the speed. they don't use a radar gun. it's basically time over distance. sothere is these loops. what nascar used to

have on pit road in 2015 you would see a handfulof red lines, loops cut in theres they are electronic. they know when a car passed overit and calculated the next time they get to the next line. they have added more loopsto make more call pit boxes on pit road. it was a simple calculation, but the issue is,the smaller the loops are, the give and take is gone. if you make a mistake and are toofast in one of those sections, you don't have as much distance to give the speed back.>> when they are entering the pit box they are accelerating. and when they are leaving they are going asfast as they can. so it's very difficult to get the timing correct. so when you leaveyour pit box you don't exceed that pit road

what did you think?>> i thought it was really tight. it's hart to see. looked like he tagged me. it was tightracing. i should have lifted gotten out of there. he was on my door tight coming outof 2 there. you know, he probably should have gave me the spot. he was probably upset, hehad gone into the wall earlierer and was fighting back. he didn't want to give me the room.i understand his frustration. but it sucks we tore up the race car on lap 100. i feltlike -- we had the spotter, almost had him cleared there, and looked like he came offthe wall and tagged me, and he had enough. part of the deal. we'll move on to kentucky. we have got the chase to focus on. i'll watchthe rest of this race on my xfinity x-1 app

we've seep this consistently with kyle larson.he is better on long runs in the cup races and the xfinity races, especially on the topgroove races, he gets the top line moving. makes a bold move to the bottom. he gets thetop line working and it is amazing how fast he can go on long runs.>> he says the car is worse this run. it's more sluggish -- his word, sluggish, but tight.tighter conditions for that 42 car. yet he is still finding time and making speed. >> what i like is he is not committed to thetop on both ends of the racetrack. that last time he ran at the bottom o and 4. goes downto the white line. the goal is to use the momentum to get to the outside of the 20.i think if he could get to the outside, he
